Sign in as usual, with the same method. Your account, profile, friends, groups, chats and their pulse come with you. So does everything that is not end-to-end encrypted: the Daily Pulse, Moments saved from it and group collages.
What does not come with you
Everything that was end-to-end encrypted before the switch, in one to one chats and in groups:
- older text messages;
- older photos, clips, voice messages and files, kept ones included;
- Moments saved from messages: they stay in the gallery but can no longer be opened, because they are encrypted like the messages they were saved from;
- older text in group polls, plans, wheels and questions.
All of it was encrypted with a key that lived only on the old phone, and that key has no copy anywhere, not even with us. On a new phone, or after a reinstall that deleted the key, the app makes a new key. New messages work from the first second.
That is the price of encryption where nobody else holds the key. We cannot make an exception, because we have nothing to make it with.
What you can do before
- If you still have the old phone, do not reset it until you are signed in on the new one.
