Groups: how they work

Up to 32 friends in one chat with a pulse. Who can add whom, what the admin does, how to leave and what a new member sees.

Updated:

A group is a chat with up to 32 people, and it has a pulse too.

The group's pulse

It rises when at least two different members write and drops when everyone goes quiet. At the top, a bar shows in green who wrote today; you can tap ⚡ on quiet members to wake them up.

If the group flatlines, anyone in it can bring it back with a defibrillator. Messages nobody kept are deleted after 48 hours.

Who does what

  • Anyone in the group can add their friends.
  • Only the admin can remove someone else.
  • You can leave any time or mute the group. Nobody can add you again unless you are friends.

New members

They only see messages sent after they joined, not the history before.

Group messages

In groups too, text messages, photos, clips, voice, files and reactions are end-to-end encrypted. Messages expire after 24 hours, like in one to one chats, unless at least half of the group keeps them with Keep. More in Disappearing messages.

Mentions

When someone mentions you with @, you know right away, even if the group is muted.
